LASIK

So yesterday I was lying in bed, recovering from Lasik surgery, thinking to myself… I really need something new and different to put on the blog besides babies, what could I possibly talk about?

I got Lasik!! I’ve been wanting it for years, and finally made the decision. My friend Michelle got it recently and splurged quite a lot to have her regular optometrist do it. But you know what a bargain hunter I am... It got me thinking, so I did a little searching and found a specialty shop that offers relatively low prices based on volume business. Of course with this strategy everyone I know was worried about me going to a butcher shop with outdated equipment! But I was comfortable with the place, honestly the procedure strikes me as a commodity by now, the optometrist that gave me a pre-screen was great, the surgeon was great, the financing was great, what’s not to like? My surgeon said he has corrected 46,000 eyes over the last 20 years. And he is an Iowa alum, you can’t beat that.

So the pre-screen a couple weeks ago took an hour, and amazingly, they had me in and out of the door yesterday in 40 minutes. I couldn’t believe it. The surgery itself was not much fun, no one likes having their eyes messed with, but it was roughly equivalent to a really annoying eye exam – lots of drops, holding still, looking at points of light, and pressure without pain. They even gave me a little stuffed pig to hug. I spent the afternoon napping off the Valium in goggles, and my vision got more and more clear through the evening. I was nearsighted until yesterday, so I was looking out all the windows to see details of nearby trees and apartments I’d never noticed before.

This morning I dropped in for my first check. I wore regular sunglasses in the car, and was shocked to see how many stoplights there are on Colorado Boulevard to the horizon. They said that everything is healing perfectly, my eyes are still a little swollen so my vision will continue to improve, but I read the 20/20 line on the eye chart.

Wow, what a crazy lucky life I lead.

More and More...

I know I've been all baby pictures lately, I promise to write some other topic soon, but they are such easy targets...

And good news, my camera has been recovered from the back seat of my sister's car! So you'll be seeing a little vacation feature on Logan shortly.

Holiday Update

Hi everyone -- Sorry to keep you waiting, I've been on my trip back to Kansas City and Des Moines to see family over the 4th of July. I don't have my camera cable so you'll all just have to be patient. Friday and Saturday I was in KC for my brother's BBQ contest. And when I say it was hot, that really doesn't do it justice. It was in the nineties, but the humidity was so high, your skin didn't stick to itself, it slid against itself because it was WET. I spent most of my time trying to make sure Logan stayed as comfortable as possible, mostly stripped to the shorts, playing in a tub of water! Congrats to my brother, who wasn't too excited with his score but nevertheless showed the rest of us what it takes to cook like a pro.

I've been in Des Moines since Sunday, and have seen Grandma, Grandpa and Wade. Dave and Ada are in town too. Today Dave and I had a mini-date, we went to see Public Enemies and it was terrific. How can you miss with Michael Mann, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale? I have to tell you, I'm not always a big Johnny Depp fan but this man makes a beautiful gangster.

Finally, one of the vacation tidbits I've been enjoying most of all is a new computer game addiction. A friend actually introduced me to the game on her iTouch, and I found it on Facebook too. It's a word game called Scramble, you have got to try this sucker, it's addictive.
