Expanding Horizons (and Eliminating Errands)

Over the weekend I ran a REALLY fun errand -- I bought my first case of wine. I went to Lukas at 9:30pm, and had the store (and clerks) to myself. I asked for 12 recommendations for reasonably priced red and sparkling wines, and 15 minutes later I had all I could carry! I got recommendations from all over the place, types I'd never heard of, a couple bottles of bubbly, and all for less than $10 per bottle.

The beauty of this errand is 1) you get a discount on a case, 2) you get to try new stuff that you might like for future reference, and 3) you don't have to run that idiotic errand to the full price liquor store with un-helpful clerks every time you want to take someone a gift. That errand may be my least favorite, and in fact I almost never bring wine anywhere as a result.

I'm especially hoping Velvet Devil turns out to be good, finally something I could remember and spot quickly. Really I'm more excited about being efficient than the actual wine, is that crazy?

First Sign Of Summer

Everyone I know is sick of winter, it's not just you. Here in Denver it's been an annoying stretch of cold and snow. I know mid-westerners are not feeling much pity, but the climate is part of the entire reason we moved here!

So over the last few days I was pleased to come across the first sign of warmer weather -- finally, some good dance music, the stuff that's meant for rolling down the windows, letting the wind blow through the car, and cranking the tunes. None of this cozy acoustic stuff. If you come across any more like these let me know, I miss the energy. Incidentally, XM radio has a great station for this stuff on Saturday nights, I've got to figure out how to receive it in the house...

Last summer I remember my favorite dance music was Turnin Me On (Keri Hilson), Boom Boom Pow (Black Eyed Peas), Beautiful (Akon) and Blame It (Jamie Foxx). I got a lot of walking done to those... here's the start of the new collection...

Aziz

Just got back from the Aziz Ansari show at Comedy Works, and once again, live comedy beats just about any other possible Saturday night entertainment. My eyes are literally tired from watering. The opening act -- Dan Levy -- was just as good, which never happens. What a great night.

One of Ansari's favorite topics is the musician R. Kelly, thought I would pass along this funny clip.

Sports, the Inevitable

Now and then over the course of my life I swear off sports, I just really can't get interested. But they keep coming back. I skipped the Superbowl, a minor victory (and a super productive trip to Costco). But now the Olympics are on.

And I'll admit, of any event, the Olympics get me. If they're on, I can't help but watch. And I've gotten sucked into the figure skating for two nights now. Really, this is so damn beautiful. It gives me goosebumps, and I've choked up a couple times. Well I'm not a robot.

So... see you in four years. Hopefully they will have gotten rid of all the idiot commentators by then. Honestly.

Ada and Logan

I found my camera! It finally occurred to me where it was when I was falling asleep a couple nights ago -- the new little purse I'm carrying tends to launch off the passenger seat when I hit the brakes, and sure enough the camera was under the car seat.

Movie Update

Well, the Oscar nominations were published today. I may have lost what dwindling interest I have in this process. I'm not sure if you remember my comments about District 9, but it was quite horrible, I assure you. A very nasty business. And it's nominated, not once but several times!! The only way District 9 deserves to be in a list of the 10 best movies of 2009 was if only ten movies were released.

Anyway, onto more promising topics. Like the next great potential, Alice in Wonderland. I'm re-reading the book, and it's just as much fun as I remember! Particularly Alice's exchange with Humpty Dumpty. Seriously, it's worth looking up. Tim Burton directed the movie that opens next month, and I am staggered by the trailer, check it out. Imax and 3D, woohoo!
