Playground

Some fun photos from the playground this week, including a couple obliging neighborhood kids... and a glimpse of what happens at home when it's time to throw down.

Denver Zoo

Well, I've accomplished my simplest new year's resolution, and joined the zoo! We've gone a couple times so far, although I'm looking forward to about 20 degrees cooler, when the crowds are all back in school. I was thoroughly delighted when we went on Monday, Ada and Logan burst into applause when we pulled into the parking lot! So cute. They were generally happier than they look in this picture.

Reader's Tip

I love, love, love a good non-fiction book. It can't be a boring textbook (I mean you, de Kooning), but if the writing is good, the topic hardly even matters. I read Super Freakonomics earlier this year and thought it was a complete masterpiece.

If your taste is anything like this, my latest recommendation is Free: The Future of a Radical Price. I feel like my brain is growing a little bit each time I read it. And when is the last time you read something that was about economics?

I just finished the third chapter, which talks about the history of the number zero, pricing, and the basis for different world economies. (Really, I swear it's interesting.) And the end of the chapter is what prompted me to write... I tend to have a bit of a gloom and doom attitude about the ability of the human race to sustain itself much longer on existing resources, apparently this is called a Malthusian catastrophe. This book made some incredibly interesting points about our perceptions of abundance versus scarcity, and our ability to innovate faster than we procreate. Maybe there's hope for us. Isn't that worth a quick scan? : )

Catalog Living

Somebody is playing Mystery Science Theater with the stuff I love... but it's kind of cracking me up. Check out the blog Catalog Living. They get funnier as you go...

2010 Movies

Well, it's been a pretty crap year for movies so far this year, in my opinion. Here's what I've seen...
  • Shutter Island
  • Iron Man 2
  • Get Him To The Greek
  • Toy Story 3
  • Inception
I've actually been impressed with all of these movies, GHTTG was just ok but the rest were terrific. But seriously, four terrific movies in seven months? I really hope I'm forgetting a couple.

Inception was fantastic, I'm a huge Christopher Nolan fan. My favorite of his is probably The Prestige, although the dvds I own of his are Memento and The Dark Knight. I could watch all of them over and over... I'm apparently a Leo fan as well, although I thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pretty great in this one, I'll be watching for him again...

A special mention to Superbad, which I saw at Red Rocks last week as part of the Film on the Rocks summer program. This movie just gets better every time, a masterpiece of the juvenille and dirty humor genre!

Another First For Kiddos

My friend Sarah has a trampoline in her backyard, and I think this may be the cutest video. Ever.

Inspiration

Julie Harris has my dream life. How the heck do I get this good? Well, I have both feet pointed in the right direction anyway, these kinds of pictures push me forward.

Look through her whole series on Florence HERE, they're amazing.
