The Beauty of Not Having Plans

Today was a much anticipated day of doing nothing. After a nice breakfast at Las Delicias, we got a call from our friends Chad and Stacey that they had extra tickets to the Rockies baseball game. We agreed to meet them outside the stadium at one, and headed down to what turned out to be an amazing game. I've never been to a baseball game where anyone actually cared much about the game, but this was different. Today's game was all or nothing to make it to the play-offs, so the crowd was intensely following the game, on their feet, screaming and chanting. It was truly why people love sports. We were all high fiving and cheering amongst thousands of fans, and how can you not feel grateful just to be alive?

This photo looks weird with no people, but it's a view of the field from the section we were in... So just imagine it with someone in every seat.

Oh yeah, an interesting trivia tidbit I was reminded of -- there's a row of purple seats around the upper level of the stadium; apparently this row is at precisely 5280 feet of elevation. And incidentally, we all sang God Bless America, and there were some extra hoots during "from the mountains." Denver really is a pretty easy place to love.

Comments

Hi all -- I've updated the format of my blog to allow comments from any user, not just registered members of blogger. Considering the highly controversial topics I select, I am expecting a positive avalanche of heated debate now. : )

Twin Cities Getaway

This weekend we visited Wendy and Todd in Minneapolis. We were there less than 48 hours, but packed in a lot! We saw lots of neighborhoods, ate out, and even took some time for Wendy and me to do a little photo shoot at the house. The highlight for me was a surprise -- a ride around the lakes in town on tandem bikes. It couldn't have been more pictureque, in fact Dave and I were bemoaning Denver for most of the weekend. The timing worked out well, Wendy is back in Iowa now to help her family with the fall harvest.

Parade of Homes

Last Friday night I went to see Denver's Parade of Homes. The five houses at the far southeast corner of town ranged in market price from $1.8 - 2.8 million. They were beautiful, of course, and I noticed lots of great details that don't have to be on such a pricey property.

I think the best thing I saw was the sitting rooms that seemed to be off every master bedroom of the tour. I love this idea, not only because I'm a reader, and Dave bemoans the light "poking his eyes out" every night, but because it just seems like such an elegant design! I also loved seeing all the outdoor patios, and the creative designs in placing them. There were several houses that had patios integrated into the main living spaces in ways I've never seen before.

Of course, it helps to be building your own home, since it's kind of tricky to add a sitting room to your master bedroom when the house is already done. But even details like paint colors and furniture were interesting! On the flip side, I was overexposed to a big chunk of the general public. Yech.

The Emperor's Wet Clothes

What an interesting article about bottled water! I keep looking back at this article because it surprised me so much. It's crazy how something that seems so reasonable and healthy could have such diverse impacts. Of course, it's probably still better than the whole population drinking sugary sodas, but can you believe bottled water is more or less tap water? And isn't it a little unsavory to drink water produced in places that don't have safe water for locals? And how do you feel about the transportation required to cart this tap water halfway across the world?

If it interests you, here's a cool list of alternatives. I particularly dig the Sigg bottles.

And here I found a good idea about making your own seltzer at home, instead of carrying it from the store. Kind of wish I would have heard about this before, and saved myself a lifetime of effort...
